UK Ranks 25th among Future Broadband Ready Countries

Published on October 25, 2009

A study by Oxford University and University of Oviedo found that the UK lags behind countries like Romania and Bulgaria in terms of future broadband compatibility.

The study was commissioned by Cisco Systems and was aimed at identifying those countries that are ready for future applications required for broadband. The study slotted countries into four categories- 1) Ready for tomorrow, 2) Comfortable for today, 3) Meeting needs for today and 4) Below needs for today. The UK was placed in the third category, after being judged as capable of meeting today’s needs. The nation ranked 25th among 66 countries.

The BQS or Broadband Quality Score factors studied for analysis were download and upload speeds, ease of availability, and reach of broadband across the country. The study further pointed out that in order to upgrade its ranking and make itself future ready for broadband, countries would have to focus on these aspects and find ways to enhance them.

The study took into consideration predicted increases in video and TV streaming in the future. The existing systems were tested for speed for supporting these functionalities. A mere nine countries were found competent to support such streaming.

Japan and South Korea were found to be ready for future broadband. Good speed and widespread reach boosted Japan’s ratings on the list. The country lays claim to some of the world’s fastest connection speeds at economical prices.

The study highlighted the need for enhancing quality of broadband. Cisco pointed out that a positive trend is revealed in the study, which shows many more countries going higher up the rankings as compared to similar studies undertaken last year.
