Rockefeller Foundation for Africa

Published on February 3, 2009

Although numerous countries in the world are now suffering from all sorts of food crises, the Rockefeller Foundation, along with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, believes that no continent suffers the same magnitude of food shortage than that of Africa. Both organizations founded AGRA or the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa in 2006, seeking to help Africa stand up with not just simple acts of charity but with advanced agricultural technology, education, and healthcare.

The Rockefeller Foundation has been actively involved with development programs that aim to promote the latest agricultural techniques and methods to small farmers to produce better yields. They have also provided grants for scientists to come up with solutions that will be beneficial to Africa’s agricultural sector; improvement is very much needed now, especially with the looming threats posed by climate change.

However, two organizations trying to change a whole continent for the better is much like a couple of ants trying to move an elephant — they need help. And help is what they have gotten in the form of other organizations pouring in aid. Millennium Challenge Corporation, a United States government-owned corporation, has now forged a partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Three institutions taking on a whole continent may still be downright ambitious but definitely, three in this case is not a crowd.
